CATALOGUE OF HIGH NATURE VALUE FARMLAND SYSTEMS (HNVFS) IN GALICIA AGROFORESTRY LAND USE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT PLANNING

Project developed for the Xunta de Galicia within the REACT-EU Axis of the Galicia ERDF Operational Programme 2014-2020.

The work carried out for the Galician Agency for Rural Development (AGADER) consisted of defining and identifying the Catalogue of High Nature Value Farmland Systems in Galicia.

High Nature Value Farmland Systems (HNVFS) comprise areas in Europe where agriculture is one of the main (usually dominant) land uses and where such agriculture supports, or is associated with, a high diversity of species and habitats and/or the presence of species of European conservation concern.

Linked to this concept are High Nature Value Forest Areas, such as natural or semi-natural forests where forest management (historical or current) maintains a high diversity of native species or habitats, or those forests that maintain the presence of species of conservation interest at regional, national or European level.

The delimitation of these HNVF begins with the production of the Adapted Map of Agroforestry Uses of Galicia, to enable the statistical calculation of the categories of High Value Areas established:

- High Value Areas Type 1: Coverages with a very high probability of being High Nature Value Areas.

- High Value Areas Type 2: Coverages with a moderate probability of being High Nature Value Areas.

- High Value Areas Type 3: Areas that are not Type 1 or Type 2 where indicator species dependent on agricultural or forest management are known to occur.

Once the High Value Areas were identified, High Nature Value Agricultural and Forestry Systems (HNVFS) were determined, which are areas characterised by the same agricultural or forestry management and production model.

This project combined multiple mapping and databases, as well as enabled a process of updating, improving and monitoring the HNVFS.
