Engineering firm 3edata appointed to the EU Expert Group for the technical and legislative development of Nature Credits

  • The European Commission selects the Galician company, a spin-off of the University of Santiago de Compostela, to assist the Directorate-General for Environment in defining methodologies, indicators, and monitoring technologies.

  • 3edata is one of only two Spanish entities on the list, serving alongside 13 international companies and various associations, scientific bodies, and NGOs.

The European Commission has recently taken a strategic step with the publication of the communication known as the “Nature Credits Roadmap”. This initiative lays the foundations to create a financing mechanism allowing companies, entities, and citizens to invest in nature positive actions, in exchange for benefits such as cleaner ecosystems, risk reduction, reputational improvement, and greater social acceptance of their projects.

Unlike carbon credits, Nature Credits aim to finance measurable results in net biodiversity (improvement of ecosystems, water, or soil). For this market to be reliable and mobilize new funds, viable and robust scientific methodologies are required to measure and verify these impacts transparently. It is also essential to design the nature credit markets and develop corresponding legislative proposals and policy initiatives.

To define these standards and advance the Nature Credits Roadmap, the Commission has established a specific Expert Group, in which 3edata has been selected as an official member in the business category.

3edata, a spin-off of the University of Santiago de Compostela, is one of the 14 companies selected within the group to support the EU in this matter. In this technical forum, 3edata will contribute its experience in biodiversity monitoring and driving conservation projects, working alongside major international players from business sector, as well as European associations, NGOs, financial institutions, and public representatives from EU countries.

3edata’s inclusion stands out in an expert group where Spanish representation is very limited, featuring only two entities and one independent expert. The company’s objective is to contribute with technical rigor to ensure that nature credits become an effective reality for the improvement of our environment.
